2027-2028 – Global Doctoral Scholarships
The Global Office are pleased to announce that the 2027 call of the Global doctoral scholarship programme for projects with Macquarie University through our Global PhD programme will launch for supervisor applications on 10 June. A separate stream will later be in operation for projects with the University of Bonn and we will send a further announcement with details of that scheme. 2027 Global doctoral scholarships
The Global doctoral scholarships call for applications for 2027-2028 will open on 10 June 2026.
Available to support projects or thematic areas submitted by St Andrews supervisors and their partner counterparts, overall the Global doctoral scholarships scheme will provide up to eight scholarships for students beginning in 2027-2028. Of these, four are prioritised with Macquarie University, and another four will be announced during the summer. The call welcomes submission of projects by a supervisory team comprising at least one St Andrews supervisor and at least one partner supervisor. Projects (or themes in which students may be invited to define their own project) should be provided to the Global Office at [email protected] for consideration by a selection panel, after which the successful projects will be advertised for student recruitment. Schools may wish to operate internal prioritisation processes before submission to the Global Office to focus submissions in their area on those which best fit School objectives, although this is not a requirement.
For the 2027-2028 Macquarie University call, priority will be given to proposals which fall under the broad themes of Energy and Environment or Resilient Societies. Projects are encouraged to be interdisciplinary. They may align to the themes widely and take diverse approaches to the areas outlined.
Applications to other areas will also be considered but should align with at least one of the strategic research themes of St Andrews or Macquarie.

Timeline for the Macquarie stream:
- Applications for supervisor-led projects open 10 June 2026
- Deadline Monday 10 August 2026, 11.59pm – projects to be submitted to both institutions at the same deadline but in respective time zones
- Announcement of successful proposals by September 2026
- Advertisement for expression of interest by students opens October 2026
- Student application deadline December 2025
- Supervisory teams to liaise with the Global Office at St Andrews and the Graduate Research Academy at Macquarie on selected candidates during December
- Notification of scholarship awards will be made by the Global Office at St Andrews and the Graduate Research Academy at Macquarie by February 2027
- Students will then be invited to apply for admission to both institutions by April 2027 and the universities will work with supervisors on project timelines and contracts for the studentship
- Project start dates either of:
- 27 September 2027 (St Andrews) / 1 October 2027 (Macquarie), or
- 27 January 2028 (St Andrews) / 1 February 2028 (Macquarie)
The Bonn stream and its parameters will be published as soon as possible, and an email announcement made.
