The Library are silent reading club, meeting once a month in the Main Library. All University of St Andrews staff and students are welcome to attend.

When and where is this happening?

We’ll meet on the last Wednesday of every month, between 6pm-7pm in the ‘nook’ on level 2 of the Main Library – where the themed book displays are. The first meeting will be on Wednesday 29th July.

What is a silent reading club?

The name says it all really! The silent reading club aims to provide people with a time and space to sit with other people, reading whatever they choose, in whatever format they prefer, in a quiet space. It’s a chance to take time out from the obligations and distractions of life, to focus on reading something you want to read, with other people around you, doing the same.

Is there a recommended book I need to read?

No! You can choose to read whatever you want, it could be a book, a magazine, a newspaper, whatever you want to read. You can bring a print book, or read on your device. If you are using a device you might want to switch off notifications to limit any digital distractions.

What will happen at the silent reading club?

Come along and help yourself to a cup of tea or coffee, biscuits will also be available, and settle yourself to read. The silent reading club facilitator will welcome everyone and ring a bell, when the bell rings it’s time to read. The silent reading lasts for 45 minutes, then we ring the bell again to signify the end of the reading session. After the silent reading you’re free to leave, or stay and chat about what you’re reading, or anything else you want to chat about.

Who can attend?

The silent reading club is open to all staff and students at the University of St Andrews.

What do I need to do to attend?

You’re welcome to turn up on the day, but we’d appreciate it if you could sign up in advance, ideally a week before, so we know how many biscuits we need.
