Residential Assistant, Andrew Melville Hall. 

  • 1-28 July 2024 (compulsory training 1-5 July 2024)
  • Full-time, residential position (full board accommodation in Andrew Melville Hall will be provided for the duration of the programme).
  • Salary £2100 – before tax or national insurance deductions
  • Reports to Deputy Head Residential Assistant

Brief description of Duties and Responsibilities

The RA will be broadly responsible for pastoral care and well-being of the students enrolled in the Summer Academic Experience Course (SAEC), alongside the rest of the RA team. Duties will include, but will not be limited to, escorting students from and to the airport, walking students to classes, supervising students during excursions, taking register, enforcing evening curfew and organizing, participating in, and supervising social activities in the afternoons, evenings and at weekends. Applicants must be available to interview on the 18th March. Successful applicants will need to provide three forms of identification for Disclosure Scotland checks, including a passport or visa, a bank letter, and a utility bill.

Specific requirements

Current 3rd and 4th year students and postgraduate students are particularly encouraged to apply. Applications from candidates from other institutions will also be considered.  We will require a good reference and the best candidates will be called for an interview. We need people who are competent, approachable, friendly, and willing to help, and who will always remain professional, both regarding students as well as other members of staff. Working with young people can particularly demanding and at times stressful. Please be mindful of this before you apply.

All successful candidates will be required to complete a PVG check.

Deputy Head Residential Assistant (DHRA) 

  • 1-28 July 2024 (compulsory training 1-5 July 2024)
  • Full-time, residential position (full board accommodation in Andrew Melville Hall will be provided for the duration of the programme).
  • Salary £2540 – before tax or national insurance deductions
  • Reports to On-Site Manager

When on duty, the DHRA will be required to:

  • assist in creating daily schedules for the RA team and assigning and fairly distributing RA responsibilities for the day.
  • oversee and support RAs on duty, from registering the students in the morning and ensuring they get to their lesson on time to enforcing curfew at 10 pm with the RAs on duty ensuring all students are on-site at Andrew Melville Hall or David Russell Hall, and anything else that may arise.
  • oversee implementation of the RA duty rota and student schedules, including informing those affected of any changes.
  • take on impromptu tasks as required when on duty.
  • inform students’ teachers about absences and update the OSM on student activity.
  • attend to any student who doesn’t feel well, and, if need be, arrange for them to be seen by a doctor (if the student needs to go to the hospital, the DHRA must arrange a taxi and accompany the student. It is also important that the DHRA notifies the OSM so that the OSM can arrange cover);
  • keep the OSM up to date on students’ health and welfare so that she can communicate necessary information to students’ parents where necessary.
  • supervise day and evening activities when needed.
  • deal with any minor disciplinary issues as they arise (e.g., student late for class three times a week; students being disrespectful to other students or members of staff; bullying) and inform the OSM of such.
  • be on call overnight, available, and contactable should any issues arise.
  • have their phone always switched on, be in St Andrews and be available at a moment’s notice, should they be needed for any reason whatsoever (aside from three days off pre-agreed with OSM)

 The DHRA may be expected to deal with minor disciplinary matters involving the students and the RA team. However, where disciplinary offences are serious and/or where the code of conduct or programme rules have been broken, the DHRA must immediately inform the OSM, who, together with the Programmes Manager, will determine an appropriate course of action.

Person specification

Essential:

  • Previous experience  in of supporting young people, childcare, summer camps, recreation, education, or a related field
  • Ability to multitask, prioritise, and manage time efficiently
  • Strong people skills, such as leadership, patience, communication, problem-solving, and organisation.
  • Must have a caring personality and the ability to act as a positive role model .
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to be a team player as well as an independent problem-solver, depending on the task.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks.
  • Ability to negotiate.
  • Ability to deal with difficult behaviour and at times stressful situations.
  • Ability to deal with unexpected change calmly, effectively and promptly.
  • Ability to create inclusive social activities, such as team sports or artistic events.

On Site Manager (OSM) 

  • 1-28 July 2024 ( compulsory traning 1-5 July)
  • Reports to Extension Courses Manager (the Programme Manager)
  • Responsible for: Deputy Head Residential Assistants (DHRA) and Residential Assistants (RA)
  • Salary : £3200 before tax and national insurance deductions
  • Full-time position with accommodation and full board in Andrew Melville Hall or David Russell Apartments

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The OSM will coordinate student arrivals and departures with the Short Courses Team.
  • The OSM is responsible for the RA rotas.
  • The OSM will organise student social activities and be able to respond quickly to a sudden change of plan.
  • The OSM will stay at AMH until the last student has departed and oversee the cleanup on 28 July.
  • Keep the Manager up to date on the students’ health and welfare so that they can communicate necessary information to students’ parents where necessary.
  • Deal with any significant disciplinary issues as they arise (e.g: student late for class three times in a week, students being disrespectful  to other students or members of staff; alcohol use, bullying) and inform the Manager of such.
  • report the breaking of any SAEC rules or the University code of conduct to the Manager.

Person specification

Previous experience of working for the SAEC or another Summer School/Camp will be advantageous. The OSM must be available to interview the Residential Assistants on 18 March 2024.

After working as the SAEC On-Site Manager you will have:

  • Dealt with several high-pressured scenarios
  • Developed your management experience by having hands-on involvement in running a social programme at an international university.
  • By delivering daily briefings, weekly meetings, and 1-2-1 feedback to a wide range of Residential Assistants you would  have truly enhanced your communication skills.
